March 19, 2010Melbourne, Australia Several weeks in advance of his 90th birthday, Ravi Shankar has today received an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University of Melbourne for his contribution to music and humanity. Previous recipients of the degree include Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi and Tibetan leader the Dalai Lama. With the creation of EMWMusic, Ravi Shankar bridges any divide between his recorded music and his audience. With unique access to an astonishing archive featuring thousands of hours of live performance audio, film footage, interviews, and studio masters, the legendary sitarist and composer hopes to provide a glimpse into what has most inspired and shaped him in his 70-plus years on stage. And, in keeping with Ravi's dedication to looking forward and not back, EMWMusic provides a vibrant platform for new artists, projects, and collaborations. The debut release, Nine Decades: Volume One, is scheduled for Ravi's 90th birthday on April 7th. The Nine Decades series will feature rare live performances hand-picked by Ravi. The series will focus decade by decade on performances that are particulary meaningful to the artist himself. In October 2010, EMWMusic will release the George Harrison produced documentary on Ravi, called Raga. The soundtrack to the film will also be available in October. | Jan 19, 2009 Orpheus Raga Prior to the premiere of Ravi Shankar's Third Concerto at the Carnegie Hall by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra partnering with Paybill Arts, will host "Orpheus Raga" a series of 12 (3-5 min each) web broadcasts documenting the unique rehearsal process with Anoushka Shankar. The webisodes start on January 21, at 9:00 am, at playbillarts.com. The site will also host selections from the EMI Classics library featuring Orpheus and Ravi Shankar. The series will culminate with the Jan. 31 premiere at the Stern Auditorium. Registration for viewing the webisodes is free. | May 2, 2008 Ravi Shankar tour date Cancellations With great regret Ravi Shankar has had to cancel the majority of his 'Farewell to Europe' tour next month for health reasons. This means that his performances and masterclasses in May in Paris, Barcelona (1 June) and London will no longer be going ahead. Raviji's doctors advise that he may be well enough to travel by the beginning of June. It is therefore his intention to still come to London for the performance at the Barbican on 4 June. We are hoping to reschedule Ravi Shankar's performance at the Salle Pleyel in Paris later this year, and details of this will be announced shortly. |

In a tribute to her father, the great Ravi Shankar, they will perform compositions by him including the world premiere of a work he has written specifically for them. The Verbier Festival, founded in 1994, attracts international soloists of the highest level, this year hosting concerts by artists such as Martha Argerich, Evgeny Kissin, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lang Lang and Sir Andrew Davis. |
